Can You Truly Learn Shamanism Online? Yes — and Studying From Home Carries Gifts a Retreat Cannot.
People who want to learn shamanism often ask me to help them choose between our Online Shamanism Course and our in-person Fundamentals of Shamanism workshop here in Hawaii. It's a fair question — and my honest answer has surprised more than a few of them, because it surprised me too.
When I first began teaching, I worked exclusively in person, one-on-one. As more people came forward and the waiting list grew, I adapted. And it was only a matter of time before someone asked whether we could work together at a distance, by video. At first I wasn't sure the work I did face-to-face could translate online. I quickly learned that it not only translates — it carries real gifts I never anticipated.
The Spirits Are Not Bound by Distance
Here is the heart of why it works. Shamanism is about answering a call from the Spirit World to be of service, and the benevolent spirits of the Upper and Lower Worlds are the true teachers of this path. Those helping spirits are not bound by the limits of space and time that constrain us as humans. So learning at a physical distance from the human teacher is no obstacle at all — as long as teacher and student can dialogue clearly about the student's experiences. And that we can do beautifully: in real time on the video call, and by email between sessions to answer whatever arises in the student's own journey work.
The Unexpected Gifts of Studying From Home
As we developed the online course, its advantages only became clearer. Beyond the considerable savings of studying from home, students with families and other obligations can take the training while still meeting all their worldly commitments. Online study opens this path to people who could never otherwise take it — those whose life circumstances won't allow a long absence, and those who live far from any qualified shamanic teacher and would otherwise have to travel great distances to learn.
There are practical gifts, too. Working remotely actually strengthens a student's skill at distance healing. And because every class is recorded, students in distant time zones who can't attend live simply watch the recording at their convenience and continue the dialogue by email — receiving exactly the same personalized attention as those who join in real time.
Why Daily Life Is the Best Classroom
The deepest surprise was this: studying from home helps students rebalance the very situations in their daily lives that a retreat tends to gloss over. We've all felt it — we go away, we're inspired, and then we come home and can't quite hold the lofty intentions we formed while we were away. By weaving shamanic study into ordinary daily life instead, the practice integrates far more deeply. It becomes a regular part of how you live, and that creates a much richer embodiment and ownership of the art.
Integrating shamanism into daily life is a priority of mine. It matters enormously that we come to hold the shamanic state of consciousness as every bit as valid as ordinary reality — balancing a modern conditioning that over-emphasizes the material and the mental. Our Intermediate training is devoted to exactly this integration, and the work runs so deep that each class needs at least a full week to process. That is why we offer it online as a three-month course.
A Global Community of Journeyers
One of my central intentions is to give people grounded, authentic training that lets them practice safely, sustainably, and effectively for many years — because when we practice sustainably, our positive impact on the Web of Life is broader and more enduring. Part of our responsibility as custodians of the Earth is to help bring the Web of Life back into balance through right action, and we can only do that by working together to heal the consciousness of separation so prevalent in the world today.
This is where online learning offers an unexpected blessing. If you live in a small or more conservative community, a shamanic practice can feel isolating — and leaving home to find like-minded friends can make the isolation sharper when you return. Learning online weaves you into a community that spans the world: a global circle of journeyers normalizing shamanic consciousness, intuitive awareness, and the shared desire to walk in right relationship and bring healing to the Web of Life.
So which is right for you — online or in person? Both are good. If you can come to Hawaii, the in-person Fundamentals is a beautiful immersion. But if your life is rooted where you are, know that you lose nothing by studying from home — and you may gain a great deal. You can begin the Online Shamanism Course from anywhere in the world.
