Most of Us Make Trades in Childhood Without Knowing What We've Never Agreed To

Peace. Safety. Approval. Acceptance. These are core needs, and every one of us has them. Meeting these needs is part of our human experience - but what have we been willing to give up to meet them?

Most of us, somewhere very early, learned to make a trade. We learned to stifle our truth in exchange for keeping the peace. To dim ourselves so someone else would stay comfortable. To go along, to keep quiet, to be who we were expected to be, because the love or safety we needed seemed to depend on it. And at the time, it did.

I call this trading your light. And the trouble with it is that the trade continues long after we leave the situation that required it.

The Agreements Underneath

These trades do not stay in the past as memories, they become agreements that live in our limbic system and keep running the show long after they have faded from our conscious awareness.

An agreement is a conclusion we drew, often before we had words to articulate it, about ourselves, how the world works and who we have to be in it. It lives beneath conscious thought, in the web of conditioned beliefs, imprinted on us by our parents, our caregivers, our community, and our culture, starting in early childhood. It was programmed into us without our consent, by our learning to mimic the responses of the people around us.

That subconscious web forms the very matrix within which our conscious, logical minds make decisions. It shapes what we believe is true and false, what we think is possible for us, how we speak, how we act, who we believe ourselves to be. For a great many people, the agreements formed in the first few years of life become the entire lens through which they experience everything that follows, for the rest of their lives.

How to Tell You Are Doing It

Trading your light is often so ingrained in our nature that we don't realize that we are doing it. It is the sentence you swallowed to avoid a conflict. The opinion you softened because someone might not like the real one. The dream you set down because wanting it felt selfish or unsafe. The version of yourself you perform for a particular person because the true one once cost you something.

None of these actions feel like betrayals in the moment. Each one feels like keeping the peace, being reasonable, not making a fuss. And that is exactly why the pattern survives for decades subtly undermining your ability to live our dreams and narrowing the life you are living until you can no longer quite remember choosing it.

The Trade Can Be Unmade

Here is the good news. An agreement that was made can be unmade.

But not by the logical mind, and this is where most self-help methods fail. You cannot think your way out of an agreement that is shaping your thinking before you are aware of it. You cannot affirm over the top of it. The very faculty you would use to argue with it was formed inside it. The agreement lives at a deeper level than your conscious mind can reach.

It has to be met where it actually lives, in the subconscious, in the Spirit Mind, and this is why Shamanic SPirit Medicine reaches things that talk and willpower never do. With proper training, you can go to where the agreement was made, see it clearly, understand what you were trying to protect when you made it, and consciously choose something different in its place. You reclaim the light you traded away, at the level where you traded it.

What Comes Back

When we learn to do this, what returns is not just a resolved issue here and there. What returns is the fullness of self that was often lost decades ago.

The truth you can finally say. The desire you are allowed to want. The room to be fully who you are without first checking whether it is permitted. It is one of the most freeing bodies of work I know, and it is a central thread of what I teach in Shamanic Self Mastery, because self-mastery means matering the power to reclaim what we gave away before we knew we had a choice.

You traded your light to survive. Now it is time to reclaim it.
