The People Who Get Under Our Skin Are Pointing, With Great Precision, at the Places We Have Not Yet Healed.
I call them petty tyrants, the person who tries to knock you off your center and seems to gain something from it. The relative who tries to reduce you to a child version of yourself, the colleague who needles you until you anger, your childhood friend who provokes guilt for your success - they come in many sizes, and they all do the same thing.
They try to provoke us by aiming for the place we are wounded. If the provocation lands, it tells you the wound is still there.
They Probe for the Wound
Tyrants share a common thread. They probe for places of vulnerability in the people they target, and that's where they direct their emotional hooks. This is often not fully conscious on their part, something else is guiding their behavior, something that is searching for energy and sees you as the source.
It searches for a vulnerability, a wound, and the agreements attached to it that allow the hooks to take hold. The person who can hook you is showing you, with uncomfortable accuracy, exactly where you still have work to do. Being vulnerable does not excuse their behavior, but healing our own vulnerabilities is more practical than trying to change someone else's behavior.
"If We Buy In and Play Their Games, We Lose Our Medicine"
The Moment of Losing Your Medicine
A tyrant tries to get you to play their game, to abandon your alignment and buy into their drama, to react from your wound rather than respond from your center. And the instant you do, you have lost your medicine. Your power leaves you, you start operating from the activated wound, doing what the tyrant wanted you to do, and your energy leaks out while the tyrant feeds on your loss.
Reacting is the loss. Not the provocation, the reaction. The provocation is just a knock on the door. Whether you lose your medicine depends entirely on whether you answer it from your wound or from your center.
The Reframe That Changes Everything
Once you see this clearly, the difficult people in your life become a mirror showing you precisely where you are still hooked. And here is the real shift: when you heal the wound a tyrant has been probing, the hook has nothing left to grab. The same person can do the same thing, and it simply does not move you. You have not won the argument, you have outgrown the bait.
How the Healing Happens
You cannot talk yourself out of a reaction that fires before thought. The wound is deeper than the logical mind, so we have to go to the place of imprint to heal.
The deeper work is done by Commanding Your Dreaming, a skill I teach in Shamanic Self Mastery. You learn how to permanently remove unresolved emotional imprints, recall lost life force energy and rewrite the narratives that tyrants use to disrupt you.
Spiritual power comes from maintaining right alignment with the Creator and the Web of Life, moment by moment. Part of right alignment is mastering the narratives that run your life. Shamanic Spirit Medicine is about truly freeing yourself, not struggling through an ongoing battle of will.
