On Listening to Nature and Our Role as Caretakers of the Web of Life
I was glad to join Dr. Kari Kuenn for the Symphony of Nature, an online summit exploring the connection between all beings in the great web of life. Our conversation centered on shamanic nature awareness: how nature communicates with us, both through ordinary observation and through the spirit mind, and what it means to take up our natural role as caretakers of the living world.
We talked about the two ways nature speaks to us, the logical awareness that reads a bird's alarm call and the spirit awareness that senses what lies behind it, and how, with practice, the two blend into a single, grounded way of perceiving. We explored the consciousness of the earth itself, what many traditions have called Gaia, and why our own healing is the necessary first step before we can truly serve the land. And we looked at practical, hopeful examples of what caretaking can look like, from tending a suburban yard in partnership with the spirits of the land to reimagining how whole landscapes might be cared for.
